Davies: Messi didn't want to swap shirts after Bayern battered Barca
Almost everything went right for Alphonso Davies on the night the full-back helped Bayern Munich dismantle Barcelona.
But the 19-year-old ran out of luck after the final whistle, as the sour taste of a humiliating 8-2 defeat apparently led Barcelona legend Lionel Messi to snub Davies during his attempt to swap jerseys.
“Yeah, I asked for it, but I think he was a little upset,” Davies said in an interview with BT Sport after Bayern Munich’s semifinal win over Lyon on Wednesday. “It’s OK, though. Next time, hopefully.”
Davies was in superb form in the quarterfinal win over Barcelona last week before featuring for Bayern on Thursday, as the German club booked its place in the Champions League final with a 3-0 win over Lyon.
The Canadian international capped off his incredible display in the blowout win with a dazzling run down the flank – leaving Barcelona full-back Nelson Semedo frozen after a series of body-twisting fakes – before setting up Joshua Kimmich for Bayern’s fifth goal of the night.
With Bayern through to the Champions League final, Davies will have an opportunity to be the first Canadian ever featured in the showcase event if he’s selected to play against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
