Manchester United reached an agreement with Atalanta on Saturday to sign 20-year-old forward Rasmus Hojlund, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils will pay around €75 million up front and another €10 million in add-ons, reports Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport Italia. The deal will represent a record-breaking sale for Atalanta.
United reportedly made bids worth €50 million and €60 million before agreeing to meet the Italian club’s asking price.
Paris Saint-Germain reportedly attempted to hijack United’s move for the player last week with a take-it-or-leave-it offer of €50 million. It’s unclear if PSG’s interest forced the English giants to raise their bid or if they had intended to do it anyway. Romano reported this week that United wanted to get a deal done as soon as possible.
Atalanta stand to make a sizeable profit on Hojlund, who joined the Italian club for just €17 million last summer. The Danish hotshot displaced oft-injured striker Duvan Zapata in Gian Piero Gasperini’s lineup in his breakout season, scoring nine goals in 33 Serie A matches.
Hojlund will now complement Marcus Rashford and Antony in United’s attack. Rashford carried much of the Red Devils’ scoring burden last season, leading the team with 17 goals in the Premier League. None of his teammates reached double digits in Premier League scoring.
Hojlund will be United’s fourth major summer signing following the arrivals of goalkeeper Andre Onana, defender Jonny Evans, and midfielder Mason Mount.
